The Welfare Bulletin Board (WBB), launched by the amateur radio group LAXNORTHEAST, is an innovative project designed to support community welfare during emergencies. This system uses Winlink to enable amateur radio operators to post essential health and welfare messages, which are then displayed on a publicly accessible bulletin board at https://www.laxnortheast.org/welfare.
In times of disaster, local radio operators can quickly update the board with their own status or that of their neighbors, categorized as Safe, Need Help, or Evacuating. This serves as a vital communication line, allowing friends and family outside the affected area to stay informed on the well-being of loved ones, even when conventional communication services are down.
The WBB’s approach is resource-efficient; messages sent via Winlink are smaller than voice transmissions, helping preserve circuit capacity for critical local communication. Each message is tagged with the sender’s callsign, allowing viewers to contact the operator for further details if needed.
The Welfare Bulletin Board aims to become a trusted resource and rallying point for the community during disasters. By empowering amateur radio operators to share timely, vital information, it provides a platform for those affected to be heard and connected, even amidst widespread service interruptions.
The Welfare Bulletin Board is a voluntary effort by amateur radio operators. No guarantees on any information are made or implied.
